Time Management Tips for Busy Hiring Professionals

Time Management Tips for Busy Hiring ProfessionalsHiring professionals are well aware of the importance of keeping the bewerberinterview process moving along. One way to do this is by practicing proper time management consistently throughout the workday. A hiring manager who focuses on using their time effectively is able to oversee a hiring process that is airtight, while directing their attention to the key parts of the talent acquisition process. Here are four time management best practices for hiring managersUse a scheduling toolSending emails back and forth to schedule interviews may not seem time-consuming. The amount of time invested adds up when youre stuck in a never-ending email chain with multiple candidates.Fortunately, an interview scheduling tool can eliminate the need for this constant back and forth. The software makes it easy to figure out the details like when and where youll meet with candidates. This eliminates the need for apologies due to any delays in response. This way, youre able to take the focus off replying to emails in a prompt fashion. Instead, you can shift your attention to the more crucial parts of the hiring process, such as whether an individual would be an appropriate long-term fit at your business. Many hiring managers arent initially aware that such a piece of software exists. However, once they incorporate it into their hiring process, they begin to wonder how they expanded their team without it.Use a scheduling tool to focus on more important parts of the hiring process.Click To TweetMake use of video interview technologyIn the past, those tasked with talent acquisition had to bring in each and every candidate they were considering for a face-to-face conversation. This limited them to the talent pool in the surrounding area because of budget constraints, and also it made a drawn-out hiring process. Fortunately, video interviewing technology has made hiring easier and more cost-effective. Now, a hiring professional can have applicants record a video response to prompts, which the manager can then watch at their convenience. This may be on a lunch break, while in line to grab a coffee, or even in the waiting room at the dentists office. When they get another free chunk of time, they can return and watch the other applicants responses. Its no longer necessary to have hours of free time in order to continue moving forward with the hiring process. Upon completion, they can opt to bring the most appropriate candidates in for an in-person conversation.Dont be afraid to delegateWhile a hiring professional needs to be invested in the process from start to finish, its important not to forget to delegate when appropriate. You dont want to become so far removed from the process that you cant accurately assess a candidate. This is a great opportunity to rely on your team for assistance.Dividing up tasks and assigning them to other members on the team allows the hiring process to keep moving. Whats more, it enable s the manager to focus their attention on only the most essential parts of the process. Asking for help is a smart way to prevent your divided time and attention from grinding your interview process to a halt.Keep the interview process going by delegating tasks to team members.Click To TweetBuild a portfolio of potential talentWhile you want to be open to new talent each time you have a job opening, continuously starting from scratch makes the process even more time-consuming. You have to completely vet all of the candidates you see. Instead, store them for a later use if you receive strong resumes that may not be the right fit at that moment. This way, if a position that better suites the candidate becomes available, you can easily contact them and encourage them to apply. This eliminates the need to start from square one every time you have to hire.Using time management tools and strategies enables hiring managers to keep the interview process moving at an appropriate pace. Profes sionals are better-suited to devote their limited energy to the most essential parts of the process when they spend their time more effectively.

3 Major Differences Between Consulting and Startup Life

3 Major Differences Between Consulting and Startup Life3 Major Differences Between Consulting and Startup LifeAndrew Faircloth and Brent Macon were management consultants for three years (Andrew with Bain Co., Brent with McKinsey Co.). They startedPrimer Sportsin August 2015 to help outgoing professionals use sports to connect with people in the workplace and beyond. Both are first-time entrepreneurs. This is the third in a series of posts for Vault in which they discuss some of the issues they have faced so far in their journey from consultants to entrepreneurs, and how their career experiences to date have helped them.We enjoyed consulting and would recommend it to anyone its a dynamic environment to learn from great people and develop at an amazing rate. At the same time, we felt compelled to get some different experience early in our careers. Launching a startup wasnt always the plan, but we hatched an idea together upon realizing that we were both frustrated with the existing sports media landscape during busy work weeks. The goal became simpleStep 1 - try to create something that keeps professionals abreast of the radar-worthyhappenings in sports, whether thats major news, a crazy play, or an interesting article that you might not otherwise see.Step 2 - get tons of feedback, iterate and grow, and turn it into a viable business. Were solidly in step 2, and its been an interesting journey since launching in August. We anticipated many of the ups and downs of startup life, but there are certainly elements you cant predict until youre out in the arena trying it. We often get asked to comment on the major differences between management consulting and running Primer. In honor of the consulting framework, here are three major differences (besides the absence of a healthy direct deposit)1. Lack of outside structure a blessing and a curseA great element of consulting is how much direction and feedback you get, both in the macro and in your day-to-day work. Projec ts tend to be well-scoped, you know if youre working on the right things, and you know if youre doing a good job. If you come to a place where you feel stuck, its usually clear how to get help and push forward. Success is highly correlated with elbow grease. Theres little outside influence in a startup, especially in the earliest stage before investor and advisor relationships add structure. Theres no one to tell you if your strategic priorities make sense to focus on, if youre attacking a problem the right way, or even how to structure your days. You decide when to platzset the alarm and start the grind, and youre the sole arbiter of how hard to work and what to work on. That feeling of control is empowering, but can also leave room for second-guessing yourself and overthinking things. Ben Horowitz said the most important thing for a CEO to manage is their own psychology, and he nailed it (per usual). 2. You are responsible for all the little thingsStarting something from scratch wi th a two-person team, its important to realize that nothing gets done if one of the two people dont do it. Theres no back-office support, or help with research and graphic design. And in a world where youre focused on a few big priorities, it can be easy to drop the ball on the many small tasks required to keep a fledgling company up and running. In fact, you have to become comfortable with helpful things being out of scope as its just impossible to get to everything.Weve found project management tools (Asana and Slack, especially) and maintaining a tight list of priorities to be important to keeping a productive workflow.3. The highs feel higher and the lows feel lowerConsulting is a team sport, which makes for great camaraderie and lasting relationships. But theres no denying the emotional investment that comes with pouring everything youve got into a new product or service. Signs of traction are so encouraging, especially positive user feedback. For us, theres no better feeling t han a reader saying they love Primer and that its given them the chance to have great social interactions about sports they wouldnt have had otherwise. The flipside is true also. The startup becomes such a piece of your identity that any feelings like things arent working can seem like an indictment of your own abilities. Resiliency and keeping your eye on the prize are critical. There will constantly be new challenges as we evolve, which is both the fun part and the hard part. One thing were certain of the consulting toolkit has set us up well to try and move quickly, test-and-learn to help prioritize whats important, and constantly solicit feedback that we tie to our strategy. Now its a matter of elbow grease and making it work. Read moraHow to Brainstorm Effectively Tips from a Former ConsultantWhy Sports are Worth Talking About at Work

Former ASME Federal Fellow Mike Molnar Receives Roy V. Wright Award

Former ASME Federal Fellow Mike Molnar Receives Roy V. Wright Award Former ASME Federal Fellow Mike Molnar Receives Roy V. Wright Award Former ASME Federal Fellow Mike Molnar Receives Roy V. Wright AwardKalan Guiley (right), vice president of the ASME Board on Government Relations, presented former ASME Federal Government Fellow Michael F. Molnar, with the Roy V. Wright Award during the ASME Government Relations Dinner on April 20.Michael F. Molnar, PE, a former ASME Federal Government Fellow, was honored last month with the Roy V. Wright Award during the ASME Government Relations Dinner. Molnar, director of the interagency Advanced Manufacturing National Program Office (AMNPO) at the U.S. Department of Commerces National Institute of Standards and Technology, received the award after presenting the Roy V. Wright Lecture at the dinner, which was held April 20 in the Mansfield Room of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The Roy V. Wright Lecture and Award was established in 1949 to h onor Wright, ASMEs 50th president, for his contributions to the United States and his community. The lecture and accompanying award also recognize the motivational power that his speeches and leadership provided to all engineers in encouraging them to become good citizens as well as accomplished professionals.Molnar, who is also an ASME Fellow, is the founding director of the interagency AMNPO, which has a mission of fostering industry-led partnerships and implementing a whole of government approach to improve competitiveness and innovation within U.S. manufacturing. The interagency team is responsible for designing and establishing the National Network for Manufacturing Innovation (NNMI), the federal initiative to build a network of U.S. lokal hubs to accelerate the development and implementation of innovative manufacturing technologies for creating new, globally competitive products.During his lecture, Molnar, who served as a Federal Fellow with the White House Office of Science a nd Technology Policy in 2003-2004, stressed the importance of the team approach in developing technology-related public policy. The theme of my talk tonight is simple ASME matters, manufacturing policy matters, and Federal Fellows matter, he said. They all matter to sound engineering public policy. Collaboration is not always easy, but it is highly effective in getting big things done. So too is engineering public policy and the reason why ASME Federal Fellows are so critically important. Public policy is a political process, requiring public input, deliberation and debate, Molnar continued. Moreover, today many - if not fruchtwein - policy issues involve technology. Public policy depends on technically sound and unbiased information. Development of policies involving complicated technologies and commercial ecosystems especially requires subject matter experts from industry and academia. Today, both engineering and technology focused public policy is a systems challenge best done by teams. What is needed are subject matter experts in Congress and in the Executive Branch - Federal Fellows play a most important role.Later in his talk, Molnar related how he became involved in the Federal Government Fellows program out of the desire to serve the government in some volunteer capacity following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The attacks, he said, had resulted in a relatively mild economic recession, but a much deeper recession within the U.S. manufacturing sector that spurred the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) in the Executive Office of the White House to seek for the first time an experienced federal fellow with expertise in manufacturing for help. After applying for the ASME Federal Fellows program and being competitively selected to serve as an ASME Fellow from 2003-2004, Molnar collaborated with then U.S. Secretary of Commerce Donald Evans and Undersecretary for Technology Phillip Bond, in a number of advanced manufacturing and RD activities, including organizing several regional roundtables, and ultimately developing the report Manufacturing in America.Following this work, the recession ended, U.S. manufacturing seemed to stabilize, and the national attention to manufacturing ended, Molar said. Yet manufacturing was not stable, and continued to hemorrhage jobs - some 6 million, representing a third of the entire direct workforce. In hindsight, more should have been done. The broader lesson Is the completion of a report, or passage of a bill, is only the start, he noted. Public policy requires sustained support. Initiatives need sound execution and successful implementation. Adjustments or course corrections are needed and for this, the ongoing involvement of stakeholders is needed. An active member ASME since 1982, Molnar has held more than 50 leadership positions at the local, regional and society levels, including section chair, vice president of ASMEs former Central Region, chair of the Manufacturing En gineering Division, and leader of the Manufacturing Technical Group. He received the ASME Dedicated Service Award in 2004.Following his lecture, Molnar was presented with the Roy V. Wright Award by Kalan Guiley, vice president of the Board on Government Relations and the host of the nights program, who called the honor a tribute to (Molnars) tireless service on behalf of ASME and the engineering and scientific community.Guiley acknowledged distinguished guest and ASME Member Dr. John Swanson for his generous contributions to the ASME Federal Government Fellowship. John is the quintessential American success story, Guiley said. Through hard work and drive he founded Swanson Analysis Systems Inc. in a farmhouse in Elizabeth, Pennsylvania, and, together with a small group of employees, developed a system that would eventually become ANSYS. Bill Jones, a colleague of Johns and a former ASME Federal Fellow in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, says that John built A NSYS on a vision combined with dedication and a strong work ethic. John now brings that same energy to his philanthropy, giving to support the development of the future engineering workforce, advancement of the profession and service to the nation and the world.Guiley also expressed appreciation to two ASME Foundation Board Members, Lynden Davis and Jen Jewers, and thanked them for their support of the ASME Federal Fellows Program.William Wepfer, PhD, senior vice president of ASMEs Public Affairs and Outreach Sector, ASME Congressional Fellow Briana Tomboulian, PhD, who is currently serving in the office of Senator Ed Markey (D-MA), and Thomas Kurfess, PhD, current adjunct member of the Board on Government Relations and former ASME Foundation Swanson Fellow, also provided remarks during the award presentation program.
